Hi. First let me apologize for the fact that this entire post is in English - Its the only language I speak. I know you have at least two fluent English speakers over here (your admin and Corpus  ), so hopefully someone will be kind enough to translate this.

I'm a member of the Project Team at the International AVEN (I'm triple A there too). The project team is an 11 person team elected by AVEN members to help promote awareness and knowledge about AVEN and asexuality. Jesh and I have been designated to design the new AVEN pamphlets.


We're looking for quotes/photos of AVEN members to include. The last time pamphlets were printed the German's translated the same pamphlet into German, and replaced the quotes/pics with the members of their forum. The German AVEN coordinator mentioned having a closer international cooperation with this version, and I think that's a great idea.
What I am considering doing is having photos/quotes of members from more than one of the AVEN's appear on the pamphelets. All quotes would be translated into the same language that the pamphlet was printed in.

Ik vind de brochure best goed, maar die quotes vind ik iets minder. Kan aan mij liggen hoor, maar ik vind ze zo verdedigend. 

Aan de ene kant vind ik een internationale flyer wel een goed idee, maar aan de andere kant vind ik onze flyer ook tof zoals ie is en hebben we niet perse een andere tekst nodig...
Moeten we ze anders laten weten dat we al een flyer gemaakt hebben?

ja we hebben nu al een eigen flyer, waar veel werk in gestoken is. Denk ook niet dat het dus nodig is om deze flyer te vertalen. Ik vind het trouwens ook niet echt nodig om fotos bij de citaten te zetten omdat ik denk dat ze je dan meer op je uiterlijk gaan beoordelen dan op wat je zegt. Maar dat is mijn persoonlijke voorkeur. Ik zal triple A een priveberichtje sturen waarin ik zeg dat we zelf al een folder hebben.

The flyer I posted is the one which was done two years ago - we're currently desigining a new one (and maybe more than one new one). Going by my poor dutch to english translator, I've gotten the impression that some of you didn't realize that.

As for the quotes/pictures, Jesh and I have already spoken about including a set of anonymous quotes into the pamphlets.

Also, there would be no requirement for you to use our pamphlet instead of yours - we'd just like to include representations of all AVENites, not just those on the main site. I also wouldn't mind seeing your pamphlet - it could help Jesh and I with designing our versions.

Oké ik weet dat dat de oude pamflet is, maar ik vind hem er ook erg gedateerd en een beetje schreeuwerig uitzien. En omdat het zo'n grote flyer is, is die ook duurder om te drukken en verspreiden. Dat vind ik ook een nadeel. Wel gaaf dat ze nu op internationalere schaal denken.

Toch wil ik ook nog even zeggen dat ik het geen probleem vind als deze flyer toch de voorkeur zou krijgen. Zoveel werk was het nu ook weer niet.

Yes you will need to - my dutch to english translator has turned your post into such nonsense that I don't have a clue as to what you were saying.

I think you are saying that the old pamphlet is outdated and too large. Then maybe you are saying you see no problem with this pamphlet and think its a lot of work to do it again.




We want the pamhlets to have wider appeal - jesh and I are considering doing different pamphlets for different age groups because what attracts a teen ager will be unlikely to attract a 65 year old person.

Personally, I'm not happy with any of the images on the old pamphlet. And I think the point that someone brought up about how the pictures cause you to focus on the person rather than the quote is valid (at least I think someone brought up that point ) . I also think it wouldbe a good to have a group photo on the front of the pamphlet.

The old pamphlets were printed through donations of AVEN members - I can see how that would be a problem over here as you have significantly fewer members than we do. But maybe if there is international cooperation with designing these pamphlets we could have international cooperation with funding various printings of them (assuming anyone is interested in having Jesh and I's designs translated into another language). If you guys are interested in that I can suggest it in the project team forums.

Maybe you have seen the pamphlet we have designed. I did the most of the designing, with help from our other members. What I meant was that if the others members choose to use 'your' pamphlet, that's fine by me, because it didn't take me that much work to design the dutch pamphlet. 

For our pamphlet I had in mind that it would be cheap and easy to print. That's why it is smaller, only one third of a page. Our idea was to be atractive to people that have something to do with asexuality. So when they see it, they will take it with them and have some first information and than find the place where they can find more info (this forum). If you like I can also translate our pamphlet for you.

Jesh and I also agree that this purple is a bad choice - i was thinking of a blue color for my design. Basically we're both designing pamphlets on our own, comparing them, and then we will show them to AVEN members and have them choose which ones they want

Flashy is most likely the right word.

I think the old pamphlets look visually unappealing and I'd really like to change that.

We want people who may be asexual but who may not have heard about asexuality to be interested in picking up our pamphlets. In addition we want to spread the word about asexuality to all people not just asexuals.

I haven't mentioned this publically anywhere, but I also think it might be a good idea to print up some AVEN business cards - someone who is embarassed by asexuality can easily hide the card in the wallet, wheras its kind of hard to hide a pamphlet in your pocket.

Thank, I seem to be able to read about 1/3 of it, but as I told my friend when i first started visiting your forum a few weeks ago, I don't really know if I'm correctly reading the Dutch words i think i can read.

This was a perfect post. Of course, I could use my teacher knowledge and pick appart your grammar/sentence structure, but then i'd have to admit i'm writing a lot of my sentences with improper grammar.
And at any rate your english will be better than my Dutch .

Ps. Don't consider it unfriendly to write in Dutch - I like to immerse myself in written languages that I don't know. That's why my account here is two weeks old, not two days old and why my one email is hosted by a Russian website. I've already learned to read some Dutch from browing these forums. Unfortunately I need to learn about a 10,000 other Dutch words before I can put my knowledge of Dutch into any real use.

For a research in Great Britain, 18000 people have been questioned about their sexlife. 1% said about themselves; I have never felt sexually attracted at anyone. In Australia, the same result came through. These people are asexual. And though there has been no research in Holland or Flanders about asexuality, it is clear that somebody who does not experience sexual attraction is not alone in his or her experiences.

What is asexuality?
An asexual experiences no sexual attraction to other people. With that comes often that an asexual has no desire for sex. Some of them think sex is something dirty, but most of them are uninterested in sex. We think asexuals are born this way.
Asexuality is not anti-sexuality, it is perfectly fine that other people can enjoy sex. It also does not mean that asexual people can not fall in love. There are romantic asexuals who can fall in love and desire a relationship.  But not every asexual desires this.

What is AVEN?
The Dutch AVEN was founded from a desire to talk about our experiences in our own language. It is a part of the English AVEN. In the first place it is a forum on the internet where everybody is free to join the discussions.
Besides that, we try to achieve more awareness and acceptation about asexuality. It is important to let people know they are not the only one.

I think that an international AVEN flyer is a good idea and I also think that your plan to make flyers for different age groups is really good. The fact that we already have a Dutch flyer should not really be a problem. However, we did already put time and money into our project, so I don't think we should just give it up on it, but there is no reason why we can't do both.
If you are looking for quotes from AVEN-members all over the world I am willing to cooperate, but I do have a small problem with the quotes on the old flyer. You might already have read what I said about them, but I'll just repeat it and clarify my opinion. I think some of the quotes are too defensive. It is like people are saying: no really, I don't mind not having sex, because I have got so many other nice hobbies. Which in my opinion sends out the wrong message, especially to people who are not asexual themselves.
I think the quotes should be about our feelings, the reasons why we are not interested in sex and maybe about the lack of understanding for our feelings.
Let me know what you think about this, because this is just my opinion

I think you bring up a good point. I think the last pamphlets were probably defensive because at that time there was so little publicity surrounding asexuality that one often had to defend the fact that they really were asexual.

I like this part of Ajayyy's quote that was submitted on the international forum. But I'm always thinking of only including the first sentence on my design

I consider myself straight, because I'm definetely attracted to women, but my idea of a good time is cuddling, play wrestling, dancing or just talking. I've always found the idea of sex and pornography quite boring."

These other two quotes are okay, but I think they should be worded a bit differently. Also, I'd probably not include them if I had other submissions to choose from. What is your take on them?

I think these are good quotes because they give some insight into the feelings of asexual people. I especially like Ajayyy's en Kassil's quotes because I think people can relate to this, even if they don't know they are asexual yet. It might give them a sense of recognition, which I think is important because it is so good to find out that you're not crazy and not the only person with these kind of feelings!
